The Westmalle Brewery (Brouwerij der Trappisten van Westmalle) is a Trappist brewery in Westmalle Abbey, Belgium. It produces three beers designated as Trappist beer by the International Trappist Association. Westmalle Tripel is considered the first golden strong pale ale to use the term Tripel. The monastery, Abdij der Trappisten van Westmalle, is located in the village of Westmalle, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, and was founded in 1794 by a group of monks from La Trappe Abbey fleeing the French Revolution. Westmalle Extra is one of the abbey's oldest beers, and its origins date back to 1836, when the monks began brewing a light, tasty beer for their own consumption. It is traditionally brewed twice a year and for a long time was sold only at Café Trappisten, located in front of the abbey. In recent years, demand for lighter beers has grown significantly, and for this reason Westmalle Extra has become widely available through specialised retail channels. Westmalle Extra is a Patersbier (Trappist Single), true to the abbey's brewing philosophy, as it is made with the purest ingredients: selected barley varieties, a balanced blend of hop flowers, house-grown yeast (the same as for the Dubbel and Tripel) and pure water from the deep Diestian layer. Westmalle Extra may have a low alcohol content of 4.8%, but it has a surprisingly full flavour. With its fruity notes and rich aroma, this pale Trappist ale is very refreshing and thirst-quenching.
